My Best New Year’s Eve Ever

(Time to read: ~ 2 minutes)

One of the things I began to focus on in 2011 was how I wanted to celebrate some of the significant annual holidays.

One event that has a lot of meaning for me is New Year’s Eve, but I had not really focused on how I wanted to celebrate it; I had focused more on how I wanted to start the new year – with a clear head and a walk in nature.

This New Year’s Eve, John and I participated in a ceremony that honoured its meaning for me in a very satisfying way.

We turned the Christmas Tree lights on, and lit a beeswax candle.

In this soft light, we began by taking turns talking about what we appreciated about 2011. It began with our appreciating things that were present in the moment that we spoke – like the candle – then extended and broadened to include everyday things that we appreciate, and some of the special events of the past year.

Next we each spoke of our intended focuses for the coming year – just a few things each. For me, these were wanting to spend more time: 1) writing, 2) connecting with other people to see how their lives and organizations might be enriched by what I have learned, and 3) caring for my body.

Finally, we talked about wishes we have for people who are important to us – like our families.

As I write this, I can see an additional piece I would like to add next year – to share a few words about our vision for our world. At the same time, I really felt as though this spirit was through all of what we shared.

What events are important in your life? How have you celebrated them in meaningful ways? Are there any changes or enhancements you would like to make?
