I Love My iPad

(Time to read: ~3 minutes) – (Content originally created in 2010)

Why I Bought an iPad

My journal cupboard was almost full, and I was finding it increasingly difficult to find particular entries that I wanted to include in articles and documents I was writing.

I thought that an electronic alternative would take up less space and be easier to search. Also, I was hoping it would be lighter than the 3 theme-oriented journals I carried with me on writing excursions.

This was in the weeks before the iPad was announced, or at least before it was available in Canada. The options then were a small number of what were called tablet PCs – larger and heavier than my notebooks, and in the $2000 and up price range. Most also ran the Windows operating system. The thought of going back to that world made me feel nauseous after the joy of my escape in March when I had bought my first Mac / Apple computer.

I was describing what I was looking for to a friend in the States. He was able to help me see how the iPad would be the best choice to fulfill my requirements.

I feel so fortunate in the timing – all of this was happening I think only a couple of weeks before the iPad was available in Canada. And Apple offered a pre-release ordering option, so I could review what accessories were available and take my time in the peace of my office making choices as to which items would create the fully supportive system I was wanting.

I had intended to leave it there – place my order and wait for it to be delivered. But a few days before the Canadian launch, I decided to go to the Apple store near my home where I had bought my Mac computer and see if I could get an iPad right then and there.

It was such an unusual choice for me – normally I avoid like the plague opening days and other places where there are likely to be crowds of people. But this one just felt right. And rather exciting.

I will write more fully about that launch in another note. For now I will simply say the experience was magical and something I will remember all my life.

My iPad has fulfilled all my hopes for it – and beyond. And it keeps on getting better.

What I Love About It

I love that I can easily keep multiple journals separate yet accessible, all in one place. And they are so beautiful. It is easy to incorporate images when and where I want them. (I use the Apple application “Pages” for this purpose).

I also love looking over the journals that I have created. That too is beautifully laid out, so that it is fun to look through them, each one represented by its colourful front cover, rather than in a dull text-based list.

I love that I can back them up so easily – so there’s much less risk of loss than with the old hardcopy versions. And that this process keeps on getting easier.

And I love that it is exquisitely easy to search for particular entries. I can do that within a single journal on the iPad itself, and on my computer I can easily find an entry even if I can’t remember which “notebook” I put it in.

Thank You to the Creators

Thank you to everyone involved in creating it – and all those who have written applications for it. Your contributions have deeply enriched my life.

Warmly,
🙂
